Introduction

1. Introduce yourself.
I am Azliza binti Abdul Aziz, native of Perlis but currently living in Melaka. I have a diploma in TESL from UniSZA and I have experience going for practicum in primary and secondary school. Despite having these experiences, I am still unsure whether teaching profession is for me or not.

2. How would you rate yourself in terms of your computer skills? (e.g. expert, novice, savvy, geek, illiterate etc)
I would rate myself as computer savvy because though I am far from being an expert, I have adequate knowledge to operate the basic software. I can also learn very quickly through tutorials that I can always find from the internet.

3. What computer software and hardware knowledge do you have?

During my school time, I had to take a subject called Computer Literacy and it helped me to familiarise myself with Microsoft Office. Since I was younger at that time and had a lot of time to spend, I used to know how to use Adobe Photoshop but sadly, I do not think now I am capable of editing using Photoshop.
As for hardware, I think I know nothing about computer hardware except for their names.

4. Have you experienced learning via the computer (online courses, using courseware, websites etc)?
During my diploma, I had the experience of learning via blendspace, edmodo and voicethread. There was one time where my lecturer was away and she still conducted her lesson via voicethread. Meanwhile, blendspace and edmodo were the medium for us to share information and submit our assignments to the lecturers. Apart from that, I also enrolled myself to learn Japanese on a website called minato-jf.

5. Did you try to incorporate technology in some of your lessons during your practicum? Was it a success or a failure? If you did not what was/were the reason(s)?
I did not attempt incorporating technology in my lessons due to the fact that the school is not fully equipped with high technology. The school does have computer lab but it is to be used by computer science students only. the school also have language lab. However, due to the insufficient number of classroom, the language lab is used as classroom for Form 3 students. The English panel has a projector but the class is not conducive as it is too crowded with students and one of my class does not have doors, making it almost impossible to make the students see what is projected in front.

Wait, does asking students to email me their homework considered as incorporating technology in lessons? If it does, yes I once tried to make the students email me a formal letter. Unfortunately, only half of the class submitted their homework. The rest claimed that they do not have internet connection at home.

6. What is your opinion/prediction/perception on the use of computer/technology in language teaching and learning?
I think, language teaching and learning would be really interactive with the use of technology we have nowadays. I once tried using Instagram to ask feedback from students after I finished my teaching practicum. To my surprise, almost all of my students responded including those who are very quiet in class. For me, it shows that technology is really engaging to the students. Therefore, we should really utilize it to the fullest.

7. What do you hope to learn/gain from this course?

I wish to be more skillful in using technology to improve my teaching skills. I also hope to be more exposed to software and websites that I might not even know they existence.

8. What is the topic chosen for your Academic Exercise? Why have you chosen the topic? Who is your supervisor?  How do you plan to complete your AE so that it follows the designated processes (chapter by chapter) and can be submitted on time?

The topic I plan to study on for my Academic Exercise is The Effectiveness of Using Songs in Teaching Present Perfect Tense to Secondary School Students. I have chosen the topic because present perfect tense is one of the most confusing tense and songs are something that students always listen to. I think by teaching using something that students like might make students understand better. My supervisor is Madam Geethanjali Narayanan.

To ensure my AE can be submitted on time, I must make sure that I have a work schedule and follows it closely. If there is anything that my supervisor suggested me to alter, I should work on it really fast and the key is, do not procrastinate.
